THE POSITION

Working in Council’s Community Services Section, this position performs a key role by promoting young people’s access to activities and organisations within the Glen Innes Severn Local Government Area, to enhance community involvement and facilitate the development of self-esteem, self-reliance, social confidence, and work towards improved outcomes for youth.

Reporting to the Youth Worker, you will:

  • Work as a team member to ensure the provision of an informed, coordinated and quality service to young people aged 12 to 24 years.
  • Maintain a sound awareness of the incidence of mental illness, substance abuse and risk of self-harm in the target group and referral pathways to guide these young people to seek assistance.
  • Plan, implement, promote and/or evaluate a range of activities to promote self-esteem, self-reliance, creativity and social confidence, in consultation with the participants and relevant youth organisations.
  • Plan, facilitate and supervise a range of activities from the Youth Booth, targeted to engage young people from the Glen Innes Severn Local Government Area.
  • Accompany and supervise participants during group activities acting as a role model and facilitating social interaction.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Specifically, you will have:

Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of current practices, standards and guidelines relevant to youth service provision, plus demonstrated practical experience.
  • Experience working with young people, including Aboriginal youth.
  • Knowledge of mental, emotion and physical challenges facing young people and strategies and referral pathways to address these.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Sound computer skills, in particular data entry and word processing.
  • Experience in community development and leading groups (preferably involving young people).
  • Current Class C driver’s licence (car licence).

Desirable

  • Certificate IV in Community Services (Youth Work and/or Community Services Work) or the equivalent.
  • Experience supervising volunteers or staff.
