About the Role

The Coordinator Statutory Planning is responsible for coordinating a team of Planners to manage assessment of Council’s diverse development applications.  The key objective of this high-profile position is to strengthen Council's capacity for pro-active, integrated, timely and responsive management of planning permit applications for the designated precinct. You will also play a lead role in educating all users of the planning system and stakeholders about the importance of the planning, including heritage conservation, urban design and sustainability, while elevating the profile of the City's Statutory Planning Service.

Duties:

  • Strengthen Council's capacity for pro-active, integrated, timely and responsive management of planning permit applications.
  • Play a lead role in the education of all users of the planning system and stakeholders about the importance of planning, including heritage conservation, urban design and sustainability.
  • Ability to drive and support continuous service improvement with a focus on customer experience, systems and processes.
  • Ensure a high standard of decision-making under delegation, via Council and representation at VCAT. 
  • Be a key point of contact for Councillors regarding planning issues and assist in the discussions and resolutions of such issues.
  • Assist in the coordination of the development approvals process functions for the whole of the Statutory Planning Unit.
  • Assist the Manager, City Development in staff, budget and organisational matters
  • Respond sensitively and promptly to community requests and complaints by providing expert information.
  • Establish and foster strong relationships with internal and external client groups.
  • Provide effective and analytical representation at public forums, including VCAT hearings, Planning Consultation meetings and Statutory Planning Committee meetings.

Skills and Experience 

  • Extensive experience in Statutory Planning is essential 
  • Tertiary qualifications in urban planning or other relevant field combined with extensive and relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering effective results with significant applications. 
  • Excellent analytical research and investigative skills
  • Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Proven understanding of service delivery principles and effective means of delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in the office at a senior level

Mandatory requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in urban planning or other relevant field
  • Victorian Driver Licence and VicRoads licence verification
