This is an exciting opportunity for suitably qualified and experienced Beach Lifeguards to join our Beach Safety team located within Council's Leisure & Lifestyle Unit. 

Play a key role in supporting the Central Coast community and our many visitors over the summer season by assisting in providing aquatic safety across the 16 patrolled beach locations within the Central Coast Region. The 2020-21 summer season commences 21 September 2020 and closes 23 April 2021.

Successful applicants will be employed on a casual day-to-day basis and will have an opportunity to work up to 38 hours per week, rostered as required over a variable spread of hours, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays, at various patrolled locations.

Key activities of this role include: 

  • Monitoring the beach environment for safe swimming at the specified location giving full attention to environmental changes;
  • Responding to emergency situations as required, ensuring appropriate reporting of all incidents;
  • Communicating with, and educating the general public on beach safety;
  • Cleaning and maintaining all rescue equipment and facilities required to perform duties to the highest possible standard on a daily basis.

Essential Criteria:

  • Current Provide First Aid Certificate (HLTAID 003);
  • Current Provide Advanced Resuscitation (HLTAID007) with current CPR qualification;
  • Current Surf Bronze Medallion or Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) or an equivalent qualification from APOLA OR demonstrated experience in aquatic rescue combined with current enrolment in a Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) or equivalent;
  • Current Personal Water Craft (PWC) Licence or ability to obtain prior to commencement;
  • Current Class C Driver’s Licence or willingness and ability to obtain prior to commencement;
  • Working with Children Check clearance (if over 18 years of age);
  • Provide evidence of Hepatitis B immunity or the commencement of this vaccination prior to commencement;
  • Provide evidence of current Tetanus immunity prior to commencement;
  • Demonstrated experience in lifeguarding or other emergency service areas with a demonstrated strong commitment to customer service;
  • A customer service ethos and a demonstrated customer-centric approach to service provision;
  • Demonstrated advanced problem solving skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively adjust plans and schedules taking into consideration environmental factors;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with staff and the public;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to Work Health and Safety, Environmental Management Principles and Equal Opportunity Principles;
  • Proven ability to build a team environment and work effectively as part of a team.

Shortlisted applicants must be available to:

  • Attend the nominated skills testing day and complete the entire test on the day specified, and be available to attend an interview on the allocated interview day;
  • Bring to Testing Day any relevant qualifications and licences as requested in the advertised Essential & Desirable Criteria, both original and photocopies. Licence numbers must be referenced in the application in order to proceed to testing;
  • Provide a Working with Children Check Clearance under the Child Protection (Working with Children) Regulation 2013 (if over 18);
  • Provide either evidence of Hepatitis B and Tetanus immunity, or the commencement of these vaccinations, prior to commencement;
  • Attend a scheduled skills testing day with the selection panel on Monday, 24 August 2020.  You will progress to Skype interviews on Tuesday, 25 August 2020 provided that you pass the physical testing requirements.

The skills testing day will be managed with appropriate social distancing measures and will be held on Monday 24 August 2020 with Skype Interviews to be held on Tuesday 25 August 2020. Shortlisted applicants must pass all of the following skills testing requirements:

  • 800m pool swim in under 14 minutes;
  • Complete beep test to a predetermined level as required;
  • Beach run, swim, run, swim, paddle, run, paddle, run within a given time;
  • Simulated use of rescue equipment in performing surf rescues, including rescue board and rescue tube;
  • Practical and written first aid examination and assessment;
  • Assess a patient and apply spinal care management principles;
  • Competent use of all oxygen equipment.

It is the responsibility of successful applicants to undertake a course of Hepatitis B and Tetanus vaccinations or to demonstrate their immunity prior to commencement of employment.
