The Cooks River Alliance along with the City of Canterbury Bankstown is on a mission to enhance the wellbeing of our community by taking a long-term, holistic and cooperative approach to managing the health of the Cooks River.  This is because the Alliance recognises that a healthy Cooks River not only provides important environmental benefits, but important mental and physical outcomes for our community.  

The purpose of the Cooks River Alliance is to facilitate the revitalisation of the Cooks River by combining the resources, experience, knowledge, and skills of our member organisations with those in the community to address the complex environmental and social challenges facing the Cooks River. 

The Cooks River Alliance is hosted by Canterbury Bankstown Council, therefore you will be employed through Canterbury Bankstown Council.   

The Role

The Aboriginal Landcare Coordinator will lead the support of Landcare related activities within the Cooks River catchment.  This includes facilitating interactions with Landcare and relevant agencies (including Aboriginal peoples and organisations) at the local, district and regional scales, to empower participation in Landcare by individuals and groups in a culturally sensitive manner.

As an Identified role, this position is open exclusively to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons, Australia's First Nations people. Confirmation of Aboriginality / Torres Strait Islander will be required. 

*This opportunity will be offered on a Temporary Part-time basis (3 days per week / 21 hours per week) until June 2027

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Stimulate local community engagement and participation in Landcare.
  • Develop mutually beneficial partnerships with relevant communities and people to implement Cooks River projects and activities. 
  • Facilitate the participation of Aboriginal people in Caring for Country, as it relates to Landcare activities and the Cooks River in a culturally sensitive and safe manner.   
  • Oversee the implementation of the Cooks River Alliance Goolay'yari Aboriginal Community Partnership Strategy.
  • Identify funding sources that align with the position and the Alliance Strategic Plan. 
  • Represent the Alliance in relevant working groups and committees from Landcare, community and all levels of government. 
  • Provide reports to the Alliance and member organisations. 
  • Participate in regional and NSW Landcare activities including professional learning.

You will have:

  • Qualifications or equivalent experience in ecological restoration, conservation and land management, natural resource management or related area, community engagement, community development, community education, and/or Cultural heritage
  • Interpersonal skills - ability to liaise and engage with a broad range of people effectively and maintain relationships
  • A strong interest in, and commitment to, local environmental and urban land management issues 
  • A proactive and community minded attitude 
  • Experience working with Aboriginal organisations, communities and people 
  • Excellent knowledge of key issues related to Aboriginal people and the importance of connecting to Country. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small, flexible multidisciplinary team

The salary range for this opportunity commences at $87,786 (Grade G, Step 1) Pro Rata + 11% super. Salary may be negotiable dependent on skills and experience.
