Manager - Governance

Permanent - Full-time

Seeking a challenging role where you can make your mark?

Waihōpai Invercargill is New Zealand's southernmost city and the heart and hub of Southland.

We're known for our lush green spaces like Queens Park, our long summer daylight hours and our local legend Burt Munro.

Our city has character, charm and a laidback atmosphere. There's outstanding nature reserves, Ōreti Beach, the Waihōpai River, a lively restaurant scene and a sensible gridded layout with wide streets and a 10-minute drive to work.

We are in a chapter of immense growth, building a vibrant city centre and reinvigorating our culture and spaces, and this is an exciting time to join a Council that is focused on the future of our people and our city.

We are currently looking for a confident and enthusiastic person to be responsible for the management of the day-to-day leadership of the governance and administration teams as Manager - Governance.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, this is a hands-on position providing direct support and great advice to the Chief Executive, Executive Leadership Team and Elected Members including chairs and members of governance committees.

Your excellent attention to detail and strong organisation and communication skills will serve you well in this position. You will be responsible for enabling and delivering efficient and effective governance systems, policies, guidance, processes and controls including managing the contract for Council's triennial elections, any by-elections and representation reviews. Leading from the front, you will get involved when needed and instinctively have your "finger on the pulse", with the mindset and focus on process improvement.

Essentially you will have a relevant tertiary degree or university qualification at degree level, or significant relevant work experience, ideally with at least five years in local government. Sound knowledge and understanding of public bodies including standing orders, LGOIMA, Privacy Act, Local Government Act and statutory requirements is also essential.

As the leader of the governance team you will have that personable style that empowers, motivates and encourages your team to perform at their best, through recognising and valuing their contributions and encouraging their development.

At Invercargill City Council we pride ourselves on our values - positivity, respect, responsibility and above and beyond. Finding the right fit for our team is really important to us and we work hard to provide an environment reflective of these values.
