About the Role

The objective of the role is to reduce the ecological footprint of the Wingecarribee Shire’s community as well as Council operations through driving Council’s environmental sustainability initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver sustainability projects and programs for the community that align to Council’s Community Strategic Plan, including the evaluation of and reporting on these.
  • Plan and deliver key environmental community events such as Earth Hour and Sustainable Schools Day, as well as tailored awareness and behavior change campaigns to assist the community to reduce their environmental impact.
  • Assist in the development of the Environment and Climate Change Strategy and the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan, and their implementation through the annual operational plan.
  • Manage the implementation of the Climate Change Adaptation Plan and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan through liaising with other Council teams, especially the large energy users and greenhouse gas emitters such as Water & Sewer operations and procurement.
  • Create and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders and manage engagement data.
  • Support and facilitate community group-led sustainability projects which align with Council strategies.
  • Identify and transform how Council, through its services, can support the community to reduce their impact on the environment.
  • Embed environmental considerations into existing Council practices to assist the community living more sustainably.
  • Monitor Council’s greenhouse gas emissions and water and energy consumption, and assist in identifying, developing and delivering opportunities to minimise consumption and associated costs in these areas according to Council's strategic documents.
  • Assist Council staff in advocating and implementing best practice environmental management throughout Council and the Shire.
  • Develop and deliver sustainability education opportunities for staff such as education workshops to convey the importance of environmental compliance and a shift towards Net Zero emissions operations.
  • Ensuring adequate best practice standards are maintained through competent application of relevant legislation, Council’s objectives and policies, Government guidelines and policies and community standards and expectations.
  • Help promote and project the image of Council as both efficient and courteous through the effective promotion and advocacy of Council’s policies, Government guidelines and adopted standards to the public.
  • Promote a cooperative workplace through positive interaction, teamwork and multi-skilling, and in accordance with Council’s Code of Practice.
