Director of Planning, 

Environment and Strategy


We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Planning, Environment and Strategy to join Council and be a vital part of our Executive Leadership Team, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

The Director of Planning, Environment and Strategy will lead a multi-discipline directorate that is responsible for delivering optimum outcomes across Planning & Health Services, Strategic Planning & Environment, Building Services, Traffic & Transport, and Economic Development &  Tourism.

The Director will provide transformational leadership and strategic direction across a directorate that is focused on providing quality, front line service delivery, underpinned by a partnership and customer first philosophy to our community.

You will have a tertiary qualification in urban and regional planning (or a  directly related discipline), possess strong land use and strategic planning  experience, and have a successful track record of delivering results in  customer service excellence and continuous improvement in this space.

What you'll bring to the role:

  • A tertiary qualification in urban and regional planning or a directly related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in an urban and regional planning role, with a clear understanding of the planning legislative framework and effective development and administration of planning schemes.
  • Substantial experience in leading, managing and developing staff, including the ability to work with individuals and teams to manage and implement continuous improvement and customer service excellence.
  • Specialist knowledge, skills and experience in planning legislation and regulations, including that of planning compliance and enforcement, in urbanised, peri-urban and highly sensitive natural environments.
  • Extensive experience and success in developing and implementing high level strategies, plans and policy, leading strategic initiatives and major projects and preparing briefings and reports that support effective understanding, dialogue, decision making and delivery of positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and empower multi-functional directorial services in local government, to develop and implement strategies, plans and policies that meet the needs of Council and the community.
  • Demonstrated experience in management and successful delivery of significant major projects to time and budget.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience negotiating and resolving sensitive and complex problems and issues with key stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated achievements in community engagement and consultation.
  • Ability to advocate, influence, build and maintain significant and relevant networks and relationships at all levels of government, with community sector agencies and with the community and business.
