Learning and Development Managers (Training Systems Officers) in the Royal Australian Air Force Active Reserve are trained in preparation for managing training to sustain air operations in a major contingency or warlike situation. Employment may be in a Reserve squadron, in one of Air Force's Training System Teams, at a training school, or in a higher command Headquarters. Reserve Learning and Development Managers are posted to Reserve squadrons or Permanent Air Force Units.

As an Air Force Reserve Learning and Development Manager you may manage career commencement and progression training, workplace specific training, deliver instructional technique and workplace assessor training, develop and evaluate training, or oversee a range of military skill training activities. You are likely to be employed as a supervisor of a team of instructors. You would also be required to counsel trainees, and provide professional advice to instructors on selection and use of instructional strategies and training aids.

A Reserve Learning and Development Manager also has a range of training administrative tasks to oversee such as development of training budgets, squadron training schedules, and compilation of annual training bids.
