About the role:
      

Information & Technology Service Group is working to enable our people across the organisation to implement, adopt and benefit from user-focussed modern technology and contemporary processes. In the position, “Principal – Data Engineering”, you are the primary technical authority in data engineering and will lead the identification, prioritisation and delivery of data engineering solutions for the corporation. You will work across multiple business areas and projects, leading the technical delivery of cutting edge data engineering solutions to deliver organisational performance outcomes in accordance with the Corporation’s policies and procedures and agreed scope and requirements.

Our team is a product-oriented and a multi-disciplinary agile team consisting of data engineers, data scientists, analysts and product owners. They are responsible for technical delivery, consulting and mentorship in their areas of speciality. The team culture is a collaborative, supportive and engaging.

 

What the role will offer:

  • Leads and develops the Data Engineering strategy and technical planning function for the Data & Analytics Section in conjunction with IT&G leadership.

  • Defines the Data Engineering capability roadmap which addresses advanced analytics and traditional business intelligence needs.

  • Leads the technical planning and development of Data Engineering aspects of analytics solutions through a complete lifecycle from prototyping to full production-grade implementations using approved tools.

  • Owns and governs Data Engineering Standards and policies for the corporation, and reviews solutions for compliance.

  • Provides subject matter expertise, training and mentoring to the corporation on Data Engineering tools, method, solutions and processes as well as the business benefit and operational impact.

  • Stays up to date with industry best practice approaches, and introduce improvements and changes to continuously improve the Data Engineering practice, service delivery and operational excellence.

 

Key skills and experience:

  • Tertiary level qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. Business Information Systems, Information Management, Computer Science, etc.)

  • Experience developing, implementing and debugging production-grade solutions in Cloud environments using a combination of Big Data and Advanced Analytics PaaS services and open-source bespoke components.  AWS is essential, Azure is desirable.

  • Exposure to data science and machine learning and/or collaborating with data scientists to implement algorithms in production environments.

  • At least 5 years of recent experience in Python software development delivering significant production-grade solutions.

  • Advanced skills and experience of data modelling, data acquisition, ETL processes and Data Warehouses.

  • Experience as a technical thought leader developing roadmaps, standards and mentoring fellow team members.

  • Experience working in Agile software teams using modern software development practices, version control and collaboration toolchains.  DevOps experience is desirable.
