About us

Muswellbrook Shire Council is a forward looking, progressive, and active Council that through implementation of new planning instruments (LEP and DCP) aims to support economic diversification and innovation in the shire.

Muswellbrook Shire is one of NSW’s most dynamic local government areas for over four decades it has been at the heart of the State’s energy industry; with two of NSW’s base load power generators located in the Shire, Bayswater and Liddell. Muswellbrook Shire’s coal industry exports 25% of NSW’s thermal coal, it is the home of the two largest thoroughbred horse studs in the southern hemisphere, it produces approximately 40% of the Hunter Valley’s viticulture and is home to the largest dairy industry in the Hunter.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who is wanting to play a part in the economic diversification of the Upper Hunter.

About the position

The Senior Building Surveyor is responsible for advice, assessment and implementation of consents issued for applications received by Council under the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act and related legislation, and the carrying out of critical stage inspections in regard to new building activity. The position will be required to function as a Principle Certifying Authority for all classes of buildings as an A1 Certifier on behalf of Council. The position is also required to provide timely and accurate advice to other professionals associated with this role.

About you

To be successful in this role you must possess the following:

  • A Degree in building surveying/construction management, or diploma in building surveying (or equivalent) with demonstrated relevant work experience.
  • A1 Certification under the Building Professional Board requirements or A2 accreditation and substantial experience with a willingness to obtain an A1 Certification with Council's support.
  • At least 5 years experience in local government building assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to providing quality customer service including conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team, fostering an environment based on teamwork and collaboration, within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Class C Drivers Licence.
