Mid West Ports Authority (MWPA) is governed by the Board of Directors appointed by the Minister for Transport. MWPA manage the following ports:
  • the port of Geraldton and the proposed Oakajee port which are governed by the Port Authorities Act 1999; and
  • the privately owned ports of Cape Cuvier and Useless Loop which are governed by the Shipping and Pilotage Act 1967 and which were previously under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transport.

Under the Port Authorities Act 1999 MWPA is required to:

  1. facilitate trade within and through the port and plan for future growth and development of the port;
  2. undertake or arrange for activities that will encourage and facilitate the development of trade and commerce generally for the economic benefit of the State through the use of the port and related facilities;
  3. control business and other activities in the port or in connection with the operation of the port;
  4. be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the port;
  5. be responsible for maintaining port property;
  6. be responsible for port security;
  7. protect the environment of the port and minimise the impact of port operations on that environment; and
  8. use or exploit its fixed assets for profit.
