Principal Planner



Snowy Valleys is in an enviable position experiencing sustained development growth and investment 
throughout the Local Government Area. As a key contributor to Council’s success in development and strategic outcomes, your mission will ensure that this growth is sustainable through the development and implementation of policy and strategic planning frameworks. Likewise, you will demonstrate a pragmatic and customer centric ethos when assessing interesting local and regionally significant projects.

Showcasing your leadership skills and experience, you will build capacity in the team through mentoring and guiding less experienced staff in decision making processes. Centrally located, you will work between the desirable locations of Tumut and Tumbarumba.

As Council’s Principal Planner you will be required to:

  • Interpret and administer relevant legislation, Australian Standards, council policies and procedures to ensure effective and sustainable management of the built and natural environments.
  • Partner, Inform and advise customers on matters impacting development to facilitate efficient and effective service delivery.
  • Assist in the delivery of strategic planning and policy outcomes to ensure effective future  management of the built and natural environments.
  • Develop rigid policy frameworks that provide guidance on both development and strategic  outcomes.
  • Provide internal town planning advice and guidance to certifiers and engineers processing other applications to ensure effective management of the built and natural environments.
  • Promote information sharing and knowledge transfer to drive evidence-based decision-making, enhance capability and optimise capacity.
  • Mentor and develop and build capacity with less experienced staff from across the Growth and Development portfolio.

In successfully undertaking this role you will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Urban and Regional Planning or similar.
  • Contemporary experience (minimum 5 years) in assessing and determining local and regional development applications, including a range of land uses and building classes.
  • Contemporary knowledge and demonstrated application of Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979 and Regulations.
  • Exposure to developing strategic land use planning programs and experience in the development and management of approved initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide a high standard of customer service to internal and external  customers.
  • Class C drivers’ licence.

CONDITIONS

In response to your commitment, Council will provide you with the necessary flexibility in working arrangements and a negotiable salary, 10% super and a market allowance for the right candidate. Council also offers a generous leaseback arrangement with this position for full private use of a company motorvehicle. Salary sacrificing options are also available with this role. In addition to the salary component you will be provided with some unique opportunity to work on interesting projects within the LGA while broadening your technical capabilities and leadership experiences.
