The Opportunity

The City Places Department has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and suitably experienced Senior Strategic Planner to join the team.

Reporting to the Coordinator Strategic Planning, you will identify strategic land use planning directions, issues and priorities within the municipality, oversee consultants and lead project teams, whilst providing specialist technical advice.

As the Senior Strategic Planner, you will also prepare planning scheme amendments as well as policies and strategies that support Council's planning directions in accordance with the relevant statutory requirements.

This role would be well suited to someone who has an understanding of strategies to enable and manage future growth and urban renewal, including the relationship between strategic urban planning, economic development and land use economics.

You will also be someone who is a natural collaborator with exceptional interpersonal and problem solving skills and who has some project management experience. Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, prepare and process planning scheme amendments in accordance with statutory requirements and conduct negotiations to achieve Council's policy directions, under the guidance of the Coordinator Strategic Planning.
  • Develop and implement strategic land use planning policies and projects, in consultation with stakeholders that support State and Council planning policy objectives.
  • Conduct high quality public consultation and engagement for strategic planning projects.
  • Prepare consultant study / project briefs, conduct tender and consultant selection and supervise consultants.
  • Represent Council before independent planning panels, advisory committees and VCAT including the preparation and presentation of Council's submission.
  • Assist with preparing annual work programs, budgets and implementing planning policies and strategic projects.
  • Review and monitor Maribyrnong Planning Scheme.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will have the following:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in urban planning or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience as a Strategic Planner within State or Local Government or private industry, with a sound understanding of the statutory and operational requirements of local government.
  • A thorough understanding of the Victorian planning legislation framework - the Victorian Planning Provisions, planning schemes and the Planning and Environment Act 1987.
  • An understanding of strategies to enable and manage future growth and urban renewal, and of the relationship between strategic urban planning, economic development and land use economics.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, budgets, identify workload priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Effective communication, problem solving, public consultation, project management and conciliation skills.
  • An understanding of State Planning policy and its implications for the City of Maribyrnong.
