Our vision is to be proactive and considered in facilitating sustainable city growth while maintaining what is unique to Melbourne. We provide universally accessible statutory services to facilitate a safe, liveable, vibrant and prosperous city to the present and long-term benefit of all people. The Statutory Planning Unit facilitates and ensures high-quality land use, development and subdivision outcomes as sought by the Melbourne Planning Scheme and other relevant legislation. The Unit is responsible for the provision of effective, responsive and accessible statutory planning services within the city; with a predominant focus on effectively serving our customers and making well justified, high quality decisions within statutory timeframes. As the Head of Statutory Planning, you will represent City of Melbourne in this highly visible role by providing persuasive and influential guidance, and highly reliable and expert advice to stakeholders regarding planning matters, including applications. As a subject matter expert, you will be responsible for making decisions and providing authoritative recommendations to stakeholders including Councillors, Government representatives, commercial and private developers, members of the public, and in public forums concerning often complex land use and development proposals within the municipality, in accordance with statutory legislation and city policies and strategies. You will be responsible for leading and developing the Planning team, fostering a constructive culture. You will have demonstrated experience in creating, maintaining and championing a constructive culture where you and your team display the styles of achievement, self-actualising, humanistic, encouraging and affiliative behaviours. In addition, you will provide technical subject matter expertise, process and people leadership to a team of six. You will coach and mentor staff and ensure that the team is working as a highly-respected team and in accordance with the overall goals and objectives of the branch and the City of Melbourne. Our ideal candidate will have strong influencing skills and the ability to guide conflicting interests to common outcomes. Substantial skills in decision making and convincing others will be essential to navigating complex political discussions.
