  • St Kilda location, however during COVID-19 Pandemic, in accordance with the Flexible Work Policy, this role is able to work from home 

About the Organisation

The City of Port Phillip is an inner-city council with around 1000 employees who deliver more than 100 programs and services to our residents, businesses and visitors. About the Role 

The City of Port Phillip has made a strong commitment to children and families through the Children’s Services Policy. This role will form part of a suite of services designed to maximise positive health, educational and wellbeing outcomes for children. 

Lead Family Workers deliver generalist support to families and children through proactive engagement in community settings. This role carries the specialist portfolio of early intervention family violence response, and will provide family violence guidance, education and referral pathways to families, children, City of Port Phillip staff and other agencies. 

We are looking for someone with a strengths-based and trauma-informed practice framework, who thrives in a collaborative team environment.

Duties:

  • Provide proactive generalist support for families across the municipality, aligned to current policy, Council priorities and Department Plan, and in line with organisational business requirements (such as finance, reporting, risk)
  • Increase the identification and referral pathways for survivors of family violence.
  • Offer timely and appropriate response to the local needs of children and families, including referrals to other local services, programs and activities, and access to material and food aid as appropriate.
  • Work in line with the quality assurance requirements to ensure the City of Port Phillip Family Support Services complies with the Children, Youth and Family Act 2005 and Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005
  • Establish a trusting relationship with families and assist them to make informed decisions and choices about issues that affect them, including home management and parenting
  • Liaise with Child Protection and define roles and responsibilities in the best interests of the child.

Skills and Experience

  • Must hold a degree in Social Work or other qualification suitable for practice in the Child and Families sector
  • Knowledge of the Children, Youth and Family Act 2005 and the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005
  • Demonstrated case management skills in working with families with highly vulnerable and at-risk children and young people
  • Ability to prepare written reports, maintain records and manage time effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to work with service users who are also involved with the Department of Health and Human Services - Child Protection
  • A collaborative approach to service delivery and outcomes, including the ability to work with parents and Council partners to facilitate groups where required
  • This role requires a current Working with Children Check, Police Check and Victorian Drivers Licence
