The primary focus for this leadership role is the effective delivery of the Governance framework to ensure Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s requirements and obligations are being met. The role requires significant customer interaction and negotiation across the Executive Leadership Team, Risk & Compliance staff and all internal departments. A broad range of reporting and responses to issues arising from a range of sources including internal and external audit and reviews, technical and legal advice, formal and informal information requests.

Where it’s located:

Our region is large and location is flexible! We have offices in Cooma, Berridale, Jindabyne and Bombala.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Developing and leading a team to implement programs to improve corporate governance processes and undertake cyclic reviews.
  • Develop, deliver and maintain Council’s Governance Framework to ensure the community has trust and confidence in the decisions and conduct of Councillors, the CEO and employees.
  • Ensure Council’s compliance with the Local Government Act 1993 and various Acts and legislation as they apply to Council from a governance perspective
  • Fulfill the function of Public Officer according to the requirements of the Local Government Act to ensure that members of the public, Councillors and administrators can gain access to the documents available under the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009
  • Manage Council’s Public Interest Disclosures process
  • Coordinate the delivery of induction and professional development programs to ensure the elected members are competent and confident to work within the complexities of local government.
  • Coordinate and monitor reporting for Audit and Risk Committees, Internal and External Auditors, Council and Executive Management.
  • Coordinate Council’s delegations register, including drafting of and reviewing delegations, and ensuring a regular review of outstanding delegations is conducted.

Important to your success:

  • Strong and effective leadership capabilities and ability to build a strong team environment
  • Tertiary qualifications in legal, business or commerce and demonstrated risk, assurance and/or governance experience
  • Sound knowledge of corporate governance, preferably  in Local Government or similar and demonstrated accurate and timely delivery of analysis for management decision making
  • Ability to monitor workload to ensure competing priorities are balanced and delivered within the required time-frames
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated ability to independently manage and influence internal and external relationships
  • Strong reporting skills including ability to prepare operational and quality reports for management.
  • Advanced personal attributes including acting with integrity and displaying resilience
