About the Opportunity

The Senior Development Planner performs assessments of a wide range of statutory planning and pre-lodgment applications, signing of consents under delegated authority and prepares planning and development assessment reports. Responsibilities include participating in preliminary assessments of lodged applications and provide technical comments on referrals from other sections within or outside the department and other statutory authorities. You will have the opportunity to mentor junior staff, attend Planning Panel meetings and Land and Environment Court matters.

The successful applicant will require: 

  • Tertiary qualifications in town planning or equivalent preferably with eligibility for membership to the Planning Institute of Australia
  • Minimum 3 years experience performing a similar role as a Senior Development Planner
  • Extensive practical experience in development assessment under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act including assessment of highly complex development matters
  • Sound practical understanding of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, and other relevant legislation and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management and staff at all levels of the organisation and with external contacts
  • Excellent negotiation and presentation skills
  • Superior ability to resolve complex planning issues with applicants for development and excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines with possession of excellent time management skills
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitments to WHS and EEO principles across all activities within the organisation
  • Class C Driver’s Licence.

Salary: Employment is in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award. This position is placed in Grade 12 of the Cumberland salary structure with a salary range of $1,671.75 - $1,922.51 per week, plus superannuation and may also receive up to 12% wages margin allowance. This position will have access to a car allowance of $10,415.34 pro-rata indexed per annum or a leaseback vehicle in accordance with Council's Fleet Management Policy. The commencement salary will depend upon the successful applicant's qualifications, experience and competencies.

Conditions of Employment: This is a permanent, full-time position, working a 70 hour fortnight, with access to Council's 9 day fortnight Accrued Day Off (ADO) arrangement.

This position will be located at Council's Auburn office, with occasional travel required across Council worksites including Council's Merrylands office.
