About the Role
The primary objective of the City Strategy, Design and Sustainability Department is to lead and embed integrated strategic planning, design and programs across the municipality through priority areas such as housing, growth, heritage, environmental sustainability and urban design. This role provides strategic leadership to the City Strategy, Design and Sustainability Department as well as across the organisation.
Reporting to the General Manager City Growth and Organisational Capability and based at St Kilda Town Hall (with flexible working options) with a team of five dedicated direct reports, this role will:
Lead the organisational response to climate change and improve environmental sustainability outcomes for Council and the community
Oversee Council’s strategic planning function and the management of the Port Phillip Planning Scheme and Municipal Planning Strategy
Lead the planning, development and delivery of integrated urban planning, housing, heritage, sustainability and urban design policy, projects and priorities
Provide strategic leadership to the department and across the organisation to respond to current challenges, opportunities and operating environment
Lead the implementation of legislative and regulatory change relating to the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and related legislation
People leadership with a focus on supporting others
Skills and experience
Senior management level experience and strong understanding of contemporary best practice in strategic planning, sustainability and urban design, and interpreting and applying relevant legislation
You will be an energetic and positive leader, who can effectively communicate to varying audiences and maintain diverse stakeholder relationships
Relevant tertiary qualifications in strategic planning, architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, sustainability, transport or project management
You will bring strong project and policy experience, and the ability to manage complex and sensitive issues, often with high levels of community or staff interest
