At the Town of Port Hedland we understand the importance of strengthening relationships with Hedland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. In doing this, we aim to increase visibility of the people, culture, issues and achievements as well as developing the organisation’s confidence and capacity in working with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. As such, we are looking for an effective communicator and collaborator with experience working with and advocating for the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
As the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Engagement Officer, you will work with the Community Engagement Team to identify and develop initiatives that support the local community. This role also supports the Town’s community engagement processes including consultation with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

About the role
An exciting opportunity is now available to join Town’s Engagement team within the Community Services directorate. This role is responsible for implementing the social and cultural elements of Council’s strategic plans through respectful, strategic and sustainable engagement with the Towns Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This position is also required to provide specialist technical advice, developing, facilitating and leading special projects from the Town’s strategic plans including but not limited to the Corporate Business Plan, Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and Arts and Culture strategy.
Overall, this role provides positive engagement outcomes for the community.
About you
Reporting to the Senior Community Engagement Officer, a key focus of this role will be developing strategic documents and policies that support the building of strong and sustainable relationships with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. You should also have strong knowledge of emerging industry trends, along with the ability to develop strategic documents and manage key projects.
- Tertiary qualifications in Aboriginal studies, Community Development or Social Science or relevant experience in the community development sector.
- Demonstrated understanding of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history.
- Demonstrated understanding of challenges and opportunities affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Pilbara.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others in a professional and productive manner to achieve shared outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience with coordinating, managing and evaluating a range of community based programs and events.
- Well-developed computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, internet and email applications.
The preferred applicant will be required to undergo a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol assessment to be considered for the role, as well as possess:
- Aboriginality (under Section 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act)
- Current “C” class driver’s license
- Provide First Aid Certificate
- Current National Police Clearance
