Do you have extensive experience coordinating and leading multiple teams to efficiently complete maintenance works on councils' local roads network?


Bellingen Shire Council is looking to employee a Gang Supervisor - Road Maintenance to co-ordinate and carry out maintenance and repair of council's public and operational infrastructure. This critical role will co-ordinate and direct the operational activities of multiple teams to ensure that work is undertaken in a safe, effective, and efficient manner to meet Council's requirements and specifications and provide a high level of serviceability for the community.


A few of the duties involved in this role:

  • Co-ordinate and lead multiple works teams to effectively and efficiently complete Maintenance works on Council's local roads network (including work on roads, stormwater drainage, infrastructure projects and recreational facilities), ensuring the work is completed within budgetary constraints, and to a high standard
  • Scope, estimate and plan wors to be undertaken, using industry knowledge and experience to determine the sequence and flow of works
  • Maintain ownership of works undertaken, ensuring the work is undertaken in accordance with relevant Work Health and Safety and environmental legislation
  • Carry out tasks associated with the construction, repair and maintenance of roads and other civil infrastructure
  • Supervise staff within the assigned work group to ensure they clearly understand the work requirements, are effectively deployed, and working efficiently and effectively
  • Schedule tasks within projects to ensure a logical sequence of work is maintained and areas of potential liability are addressed as priorities
  • Receive and resolve workforce complaints at a worksite level to ensure any problems are effectively addressed
  • Ensure appropriate implementation of traffic control at work sites
  • Implement on-site safety, quality, and environmental controls, as required by Council's Integrated Management System
  • Set out proposed works in accordance with plans, specifications, and written instructions

Essential Selection Criteria:

  1. WHS General Induction Training for construction sites
  2. Current C class Drivers licence
  3. TAFE Certificate 3 in Civil Construction and Maintenance (Roads and Related Infrastructure), or equivalent, or demonstrated experience in the civil construction/maintenance industry /similar role. (min 5 years)
  4. Proven ability to resolve problems at the worksite level
  5. Demonstrated supervisory skills to lead, direct and motivate multiple teams, across different areas of maintenance
  6. Proven Computer literacy skills
  7. Demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks and schedule works so they are completed safely, to appropriate standards and within timeframes and budget
  8. Proven literacy and numeracy skills to complete relevant documentation required for the role

Desirable Selection Criteria:

  1. Class HR drivers licence
  2. Experience in rural roads maintenance activities (unsealed road maintenance/drainage)
  3. Current Traffic Controller's Certificate (PTWMP).
  4. First Aid Certificate
  5. Plant Operating Experience / Qualifications (Loader, Skidsteer, Roller, Grader, watercraft)
  6. Current Chainsaw Qualification (Crosscut and trim felled trees)
