Maitland City Council

Maitland, first settled by Europeans in approximately 1810, is the focus of a diversity of economic activities including agriculture, tourism, mining, manufacturing, transport and construction industries. Its long history is reflected in the many historic buildings built in the mid 1800s, using local sandstone and cedar.

Arguably Maitland’s greatest asset is its location on the rich alluvial flats of the Hunter and Paterson Rivers. It is one of the most highly productive areas in NSW and a service centre for a rich agricultural hinterland. With access to two national highways, a 90-minute freeway drive to Sydney, 30 minutes to the vineyards, Newcastle and Port Stephens, close proximity to airports, shipping terminals and freight rail access, you won’t find a better base than Maitland.

However, there is more to Maitland than just its location. Maitland is the “Can Do” city and existing and new enterprises will experience the benefits of this cultural attitude. The city’s Council is extremely proactive in making Maitland an attractive proposition. It understands that through commercial growth, Maitland can build on its reputation as one of Australia’s greatest cities and commercial centres.

Maitland also has a “Can Do” population. Residents understand the need to work with all stake holders in preserving the city’s heritage and environment while at the same time helping business and industry to forge new endeavours.
