The Policy and Legislation Branch provides policy services and advice, including review and development of legislation and subordinate legislation to the Deputy Secretary, Regulation and the Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation. The legislative program is an important structural element, defining and driving the activities of the branch. The branch also identifies and analyses underlying systemic and emerging consumer issues and provides advice on appropriate policy responses.
About the role
As the Senior Policy Advisor, you will provide authoritative policy advice informed by strategic thinking and supported by targeted stakeholder engagement and sound project management, to assist teams in the development of cabinet submissions on policy and legislative issues, regulations, and legislative instruments.
In addition, your focus will be to:
- lead and participate in projects to deliver policy reviews, develop evidence-based policy proposals, undertake research and public consultations, and analyse and evaluate public policy options to address consumer and fair trading issues and deliver on government priorities
- review legislation administered by CAV, develop and evaluate legislative and other regulatory options and advise on the implications of specific proposals
- prepare and/or assist in the preparation of cabinet submissions, reports and papers, briefings, regulations and legislative instruments, and correspondence on relevant issues.
Two ongoing, full-time positions are available.
As our ideal candidate, you will have highly developed knowledge and experience of law and procedure, especially in relation to consumer protection. You will have a demonstrated capability in preparing Cabinet, Parliamentary and other regulatory documents such as Regulatory Impact Statements and drafting instructions. Superior written communication, policy, influencing, and negotiation skills are essential.
An appropriate tertiary qualification in law is desirable.
