Lands Protection Officer

Position Overview

With a particular focus on invasive animals management, the purpose of this role will be to assist the Land Protection branch of Council's Infrastructure Services to achieve and maintain sustainable land use through the management and control of invasive plants and animals under Queensland's Biosecurity Act 2014.

Council has a number of Lands Protection Officers. Some are more focused on invasive plants and other are more focused on pest animals. This position (whilst often requiring work related to invasive plants as well) will be primarily focused on invasive animals management within the team.

What we are looking for?

Council is seeking qualified and experienced lands protection personnel to offer a solutions-based approach to lands protection management, along with an enthusiastic attitude and a high level of understanding of complex pest management control processes.  As an Officer - Lands Protection, you could expect to be involved with responsibilities such as:

  • Assisting with the development and review of land protection operational plans
  • Providing specialist advice to stakeholders on invasive plant and animal management (with a particular focus on pest animals, including 1080 baiting)
  • Monitoring of declared pests, including inspections and control techniques
  • Undertake compliance and enforcement actions under provisions of the Biosecurity Act 2014

To be successful, candidates will require:

  • Demonstrated experience with land protection and declared pest management
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills to facilitate effective communication and education of stakeholders and land owners will be critical for success.  
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work alone remotely and safely
  • Sound knowledge, and/or experience in investigation/enforcement/compliance matters
  • Demonstrated knowledge (or ability to obtain knowledge quickly) of Queensland's Biosecurity Act 2014 will be highly regarded.

A degree or diploma level of education in the field of Natural Resource Management, Plant and Animal Biology or similar field would be highly desirable.

Remuneration:  Salary range - $68,661 to $72,947 per annum plus 13 per cent superannuation.
