The Geospatial Technician is a soldier in the Royal Australian Engineer Corps who collects, analyses, manipulates, portrays, reproduces and distributes spatially referenced earth data (spatially referenced data includes maps, digital geospatial information in vector, raster and matrix form, and geographical coordinates).

Soldiers of the Royal Australian Engineer Corps are known as 'Sappers' and are responsible for assisting our own forces to move whilst also denying mobility to the enemy. Sappers are trained in a broad range of tasks including bridge-building, minefield clearance, demolitions, field defences, building construction, road and airfield construction and repair, emergency response and geospatial and multimedia support.

Main Job Functions:

  • Manipulation and enhancement of geospatial data to provide terrain analysis/visualisation products;
  • Capture and exploitation of airborne imagery;
  • Capture and processing of geodetic and engineering survey data;
  • Management of geospatial datasets;
  • Reproduction and dissemination of geospatial information in various formats; and
  • Provision of geospatial advice.
