Can you keep a secret? Are you good at problem solving? Do you want to be paid to learn a foreign language and/or surveillance techniques? If so, then a career in the Air Force as an Air Intelligence Analyst - Operational Intelligence is for you. Job DetailsOther Ranks (Non Technical)Air Intelligence Analyst – Operational Intelligence (AIA (OPINT)) are part of the Air Force’s Aerospace Intelligence Employment Group and are employed in the sensitive and highly challenging fields of operational and signals intelligence. They contribute directly to the Air Force mission in a wide range of Information Warfare related roles. AIA (OPINT)s were previously called Signals Operator (Linguist). After initial training, AIA (OPINT)s will consolidate training in the workplace in order to demonstrate proficiency on a range of all source intelligence analysis and specific operational intelligence tasks. The main duties of the AIA (OPINT) are to apply analytical skills to collect, process and disseminate foreign intelligence using state-of-the-art technology. After consolidation of skills learnt during training, AIA (OPINT) duties will include, but are not limited to the:
In subsequent employment, AIA (OPINT)s will be employed in a diverse range of specialist intelligence related duties. Duties include the research, collation, analysis and dissemination of all-source intelligence information for inclusion in the preparation of intelligence reports; intelligence briefings; preparation of mission support packs for air, ground, space and cyber operations; ISR data capture, processing and dissemination; metadata archiving; battlespace visualisation; and intelligence imagery capture. Under supervision, an AIA (OPINT) may also be employed in the following specialised duties:
To perform these duties an AIA (OPINT) must have high levels of written and oral communication skills, be able to think logically and objectively, perform well under pressure, be flexible and have strength of conviction. This is because decisions made by the AIA (OPINT) may impact on ADF operations. AIA (OPINT)s must demonstrate integrity and be able to foster confidence in their decisions and trust in their abilities. AIA (OPINT)s are required to have a well-developed analytical approach to problem solving; a positive and responsible attitude to handling classified material and a commitment to protecting information that is sensitive to national interests. AIA (OPINT)s are information collectors, processors and managers and must be competent in the use of information technology systems and be willing to rapidly assimilate and adapt to newly introduced technology. Employment conditions vary but due to security requirements, the majority of AIA (OPINT) duties are performed in windowless environments and most work occurs using computer work stations or portable systems. There is shiftwork in some workplaces and odd work hours also occur during major exercises or extended operations. Personnel supporting flying operations may deploy to remote locations at short notice. All members of the AIA (OPINT) mustering should expect temporary duties to any location for exercise, specialist training courses or to reinforce other units on deployment. When deployed in a tactical or field environment, AIA (OPINT)s may be required to work in deployable, security accredited cabins, tents and makeshift facilities. In deployed and non-deployed environments, AIA (OPINT)s will operate as part of a team but in some scenarios will be the only intelligence member of a team. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Air Force’s Intelligence workforce has been reformed. The employment of Intelligence trained airmen and airwomen has diversified over recent years in support of a growing Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capability. Remotely Piloted Vehicles and other ISR assets have resulted in an increased demand for qualified Intelligence Analysts. The AIA mustering effectively offers greater job diversification for all personnel; permitting employment as a specialist, for example Signals Intelligence, Operational Intelligence or Geospatial Intelligence, as well as using your analytical skills as a key member of broader Intelligence teams. As an AIA you can expect to be a key contributor to the operational support of Air Force assets, this will include deployments as part of a Multi-Intelligence workforce. Most AIAs can expect to be qualified and capable of deployed operations within two years of graduation. |
