Coordinator Social Planning and Advocacy

THE POSITION: The position manages Council’s Social Planning and Advocacy Team and provides leadership for social planning, advocacy for community and social issues, social/community/health impact assessments of proposals relating to strategic plans, policy, legislative changes and applications for liquor, gaming and development.  It also is responsible for collaborating with the Community Projects and Partnerships team to develop policy, performance agreements with community organisations, interpretation of data and strategies to support community work. Management of staff and resources as well as compliance with Divisional and corporate data collection, planning and reporting is required.

ESSENTIAL: 

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field.
  • It is advantageous to hold postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline such as management, social planning, policy or local government.
  • Licences:  minimum – driver's license – 1A.
  • Current knowledge of social planning, advocacy and community and cultural development practice is essential.
  • Awareness of current issues impacting the community.
  • Developed understanding of probity.
  • Successful work experience of at least 5 years in social planning, advocacy, policy development and/or social impact assessment. It is preferable that this experience is in the local government context.
  • Leadership, management and supervision of a diverse range of staff, teams and/or projects in a highly diverse, complex and disadvantaged community where there are often competing priorities and a fluid environment.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage conflict, competing priorities and community requirements within a local government context.

DESIRABLE:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including preparation and presentation of advice, reports, submissions and presentations with the ability to lead engagement and consultation processes with community, government and internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to build constructive and productive relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders including community organisations, government agencies and businesses to develop plans and projects.
  • Proven ability to represent Council in local, regional, state and federal forums to influence decisions and to effectively exchange information.
  • Ability to lead, review, evaluate, design and implement processes, systems and programs to improve transparency and accountability of the Division’s work.
  • Role model and lead ethical practice and probity management.

SALARY & EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:

  • Permanent position, 70 hours per fortnight
  • Accruement of flexi time is available
  • This position is a Grade 8, salary range is $97,329.00  p.a. with progression to $104,813.00 p.a. on demonstrated competencies, with performance progression to $114,009 p.a.
