With an Organisational Structure with close to 150 identified positions, roles range from Masters and Degree qualified professionals (Engineers, Surveyors, Planners and Accountants) to experienced labourers, trainees, trade qualified operators and a diverse range of officers in administraion, Strategy, environment, economic development and community. With a $22 million capitol works budget for the delivery of infrastructure and capital projects, Council is currently undertaking exciting projects such as the Lake Forbes Activation Strategy, CBD redevelopment Projects, major works in regards to the Water and Sewer networks, our state of the art Central West Livestock Exchange and a range of other exciting projects. Forbes Shire Council is also currently deliversing major projects in the People and Technology space including Leadership Development programs, online management software and enterprise wide system upgrades - in the aim of being future ready for the dynamic and changing pace of Local Government.

Forbes Shire Council's selection process stages are outlined below: 

  1. Short-listing. The selection panel (usually 3 members) will assess all applications against the selection criteria contained in the position description. The panel will then decide which applicants best meet the criteria and will call for interview.
  2. Interviewing. You will be given at least 2 days notice if you are required for an interview. The interview panel will consist of either 3 or 4 members, one of which will be the HR Facilitator, who will work with the panel to recommend the most suitable person for the position.
  3. Reference checks and other checks. Referee checks will be carried out on the recommended applicant/s. Positions that have been identified as child-related, will be required to undergo a Working with Children Check through the Office of Children's Guardian NSW
  4. Pre-employment Functional Assessment. The preferred applicant will be required to undergo a pre-employment functional assessment at Council’s expense. This will include a Functional Assessment, urine Drug and Alcohol Testing and a hearing screen
  5. Notification of result. The successful applicant will be verbally notified as soon as possible after the interview and will receive a written letter of offer via email and in the post. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by email once the offer of employment has been accepted and Council has been formally notified of the acceptance.

The Cadet Building Surveyor will assist Council Officers in the assessment and implementation of consents issued for applications received by Council under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act and related legislation as well as assisting with carrying out mandatory critical stage inspections in regards to new building activity. Additionally, this role will also be required to support and assist Council officers in undertaking the environmental health functions. This role will also be required to provide administration assistance relating to building certification and environmental health.


As a Cadet you will be enrolled or will be required to enrol into a Bachelor Building Surveying Certification (Honours) via online or distance education through an approved Building Professionals Board accredited Building Surveying course with an Australian University.


Ongoing employment as a Cadet Building Surveyor will require successful completion of the units associated with the degree and program. The estimated completion time is six (6) years. It should be noted that Council cannot guarantee continuing employment following successful completion of the chosen course of study.


Incumbents will be allocated 1 study day per fortnight to formal learning which will be undertaken at Council. 


Desired Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Industry recognised grade in the Higher School Certificate enabling entry to a University to study for a Bachelor Building Surveying Certification (Honours); or

  • Demonstrated current enrolment and progression through a Bachelor Building Surveying Certification (Honours) with a University;

  • Willingness to learn rapidly and ask questions in mentoring from others;

  • Capable of balancing work and study requirements equally, and being adaptable to the demands of both when needed;

  • Willingness to work in partnership with lots of different people to deliver work;

  • Ability to learn and master project management skills;

  • Provisional or Class C (Standard) Drivers Licence.

  • Demonstrated high level of motivation;

  • Demonstrated experience working both independently and in a team, fostering an environment based on teamwork and collaboration;

  • Demonstrated high level communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in written form.
