We have extensive and diverse operations within the environment and planning law space including development assessment, strategic planning and regulatory activities. We are currently searching for an experienced Environmental and Planning lawyer who will be responsible for addressing and meeting the organisation’s legal needs within that space.


The role will require you to work closely with the Legal team to ensure a quality legal service is provided in response to the organisation’s legal needs.


This opportunity is offered on a Permanent Full Time basis


Some of your duties in this role will include:

  • Represent Council in Land and Environment Court proceedings
  • Provide legal advice to key stakeholders on matters pertaining to town planning and environmental Law
  • Assist in the negotiation and drafting of planning agreements.
  • Provide training to Council staff on town planning and environmental law matters.
  • Remain abreast of legislative and policy changes in the town planning and environmental law spheres.
  • Monitor, identify and collaboratively assist in managing organisational risk.
  • Where required, assisting delivering legal services on matters not falling within the town planning and environmental law spheres
  • Monitor achievement of outcomes and projects by staff, ensuring services delivered meet the Community Strategic Plan, management plans and service agreement requirements.
  • Evaluate and monitor the team’s performance and culture to ensure services provided are meeting standards, expectations and commitments.
  • Facilitating the development and implementation, review and maintenance of systems and procedures.

The successful applicant will:

  • be admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales;
  • have extensive experience in the fields of town planning and environmental law; and
  • have extensive experience in running and acting as an advocate in Land and Environment Court merit appeals.

It is also desirable for the successful applicant to:

  • have appreciation of the complexity of Local Government, in particular the social, political and legal frameworks within which it operates;
  • be a Law Society Accredited Specialist with respect to environmental and planning law; and
  • have a working knowledge of local government, property and commercial law and other fields of law cognate to local government.
