This is an exciting opportunity for suitably qualified and experienced Beach Lifeguards to join our Beach Safety team located within Council's Leisure & Lifestyle Unit. Seasonal Lifeguards are employed for the duration of the summer season (24 September 2019 until 27 April 2020) working a 38 hour week rostered between 6am and 6pm from Monday to Friday. 


Seasonal Lifeguards take on a leadership role for their allocated patrolled beach and play a key role in mentoring and supporting the lifeguarding team to provide the very best in aquatic safety for residents and visitors within the Central Coast Region.


A day in the life of a beach lifeguard includes: 

  • Monitoring the Beach environment and surrounds for safe swimming giving full attention to all environmental changes;
  • Responding to emergency situations as required, mobilising the team, and ensuring appropriate reporting of these incidents;
  • Communicating with and educating general public on beach safety;
  • Following directions set by Team Leader Beach Safety, Beach Safety Officer and or Senior Lifeguard to ensure optimal delivery of Beach Lifeguard services and work across multiple locations within the local government area as required;

Essential Criteria:

  • Current Provide First Aid certificate (HLTAID 003);
  • Current Provide Advanced Resuscitation (HLTAID 007) with current CPR qualification;
  • Current Surf Bronze Medallion or Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) or an equivalent qualification from APOLA OR demonstrated experience in aquatic rescue combined with current enrolment in a Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) or equivalent;
  • Current Personal Water Craft (PWC) Licence or ability to obtain prior to season commencement;
  • Current Class C Driver’s Licence;
  • Working with Children Check or willingness to obtain prior to season commencement;
  • Provide evidence of Hepatitis B immunity or the commencement of this vaccination prior to season commencement;
  • Provide evidence of current tetanus vaccination prior to commencement;
  • Demonstrated experience in lifeguarding or other emergency service areas with a demonstrated strong commitment to customer service;
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out safety procedures and use appropriate safety equipment;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to Work Health and Safety and Environmental Management Principles;
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and understanding of, Equal Opportunity Principles;
  • Proven ability to build a team environment and work effectively as part of a team;
  • Demonstrated advanced problem solving skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively adjust plans and schedules;
  • A customer service ethos and a demonstrated customer-centric approach to service provision;
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace change and commitment to work across multiple work locations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with staff and the public.

Shortlisted applicants must be available to:

  • Be available to attend the nominated interview and test day and complete the entire test on the day specified;
  • Bring to Testing Day any relevant qualifications and licences as requested in the advertised Essential & Desirable Criteria, both original and photocopies. Licence numbers must be referenced in the application in order to proceed to testing;
  • Provide a Working with Children Check Clearance under the Child Protection (Working with Children) Regulation 2013 (if over 18);
  • Provide either evidence of Hepatitis B and Tetanus immunity, or the commencement of these vaccinations, prior to commencement;
  • Attend a scheduled skills testing day with the selection panel on 22 August 2019. If you progress through the skills day testing you will be provided a day for interview to be completed.

The skills testing day will be held on Thursday, 22 August 2019 and shortlisted applicants must pass all of the following skills testing requirements on the day:

  • 800m pool swim in under 14 minutes;
  • Complete beep test to a predetermined level as required;
  • Beach run, swim, run, swim, paddle, run, paddle, run within a given time;
  • Simulated use of rescue equipment in performing surf rescues, including rescue board and rescue tube;
  • Practical and written first aid examination and assessment;
  • Assess a patient and apply spinal care management principles;
  • Competent use of all oxygen equipment.

This role provides for a salary range of $1,068.18 to $1,282.12 per week ($55,694 to $66,849 per annum) plus superannuation plus $16.20 weekly allowance.
