Senior Town Planner



The purpose of this position is to meet the strategic planning requirements of the Cabonne Shire within the planning legislation framework, having regard to changing economic, environmental, social and demographic conditions. The salary range for this position is from $1486.20 - $1600.40 per week exclusive of superannuation. There is also a leaseback vehicle attached to this position.


Job Description

  • Provide accurate and timely Planning & Development advice and services with in legislative requirements and best practice to achieve a sustainable future for Cabonne.
  • Carry out the daily supervision of the Town planner, supporting and providing technical advice as necessary.
  • Ensure that all statutory requirements are met and that Councils interests and integrity are protected.
  • Effectively develop and implement strategies and programs to protect and preserve the heritage of the shire.
  • Effectively prepare minor amendments to the Cabonne Local Environmental Plan.
  • Develop effective strategies to ensure Cabonne’s local environmental plan reflects current community’s needs.
  • Effectively enforce provisions of planning legislation, plans and development consents.
  • Improve community awareness of environmental planning and resource management practices.
  • Undertake the strategic planning necessary to achieve sustainable land management and economic growth.


Accurately and efficiently issue various planning certificates in accordance with legislative requirements and Council procedures.


Desired Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Urban & Regional planning or equivalent
  • Class C driver’s licence.
  • Construction Induction Certification (White Card). 
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, urban & regional design review and strategic planning.
  • Experience in reviewing rezoning proposals, preparing planning proposals and development control plans to achieve sustainable strategic land use planning.
  • Sound understanding of, and ability to interpret and apply NSW Planning Legislation and Local Environmental Plan (LEP) making process, NSW Heritage Legislation and Local Government Act.
  • Ability to solve problems and independently manage a number of projects, studies and consultants to achieve innovative outcomes for complex planning matters.
  • High level of computer literacy (including Microsoft Office, spreadsheets and geographical information systems).
  • Good communication skills and experience preparing reports, correspondence and presentations on complex planning matters, within established timeframes.
  • Good interpersonal skills with experience in community consultation and effective communications with stakeholders, elected representatives and government departments.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, contribute and provide guidance and assistance.
