In the role of Senior Legal Officer you will be part of a team of administrative and legal staff and ensure that, amongst other things, contraventions of transport-related legislation are efficiently and effectively prosecuted. The role will require an ability to deal with concurrent tasks and competing priorities, meet tight timeframes, and think laterally and analytically whilst delivering a high quality output. You will provide informed advice to management, other staff and external stakeholders and you will have excellent communication skills and the ability to negotiate favourable outcomes. Accountabilities include: • Prepare more difficult matters for summary hearing by drafting documents to commence summary proceedings, assessing whether additional statements or other evidence is required, and interviewing witnesses. • Liaise with legal representatives regarding preliminary hearing issues, requests for particulars and submissions. • Prepare matters for sentence. • Appear upon summary hearings, callovers and licence applications in the Magistrates' Court. • Draft legal documents, such as complaints and summonses in relation to breaches of the Acts and Regulations administered by the department, while ensuring that legislative and policy considerations are applied. • Provide thoroughly researched, practical and accurate legal advice on a wide range of matters to officers of the department, including Transport Inspectors. • Supervise the work of, motivate and provide leadership to more junior legal staff and administrative officers. • Communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with officers of the department and external parties. • Provide timely instructions to and instruct counsel for complicated hearings and appeals. • Carry out other duties of a legal and administrative nature in a timely manner. • Deliver successful business outcomes individually or as a team member with an emphasis on meeting deadlines within quality, cost and time constraints. • Provide sound options or recommendations to internal and external stakeholders, and assist in the development of business practices, policy and legislation. • Prepare complex correspondence, reports, briefing notes and submissions in accordance with departmental standards. • Lead, contribute and assist in activities or working groups that support and enhance the division's business plan and the department's objectives, values, and performance. • Actively seek and participate in professional development as well as offer mentoring and guidance to fellow team members. • Consult, liaise and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to resolve issues, develop recommendations, strategies and/or policies. • Ensure public sector legislation, standards, policies, practices and procedures relating to human, financial and physical resources are met. This role reports to the Manager. Applications to remain current for 12 months.
