Primary Objective: As part of the Pathology team, analyse pathology samples with minimal direct supervision to provide a comprehensive 24 hour diagnostic and advisory service for the Department of Health and its clients.


Context Statement: The Pathology laboratory provides diagnostic testing in Clinical Chemistry, Transfusion, Haematology, and Microbiology.  This position is multi-disciplinary and applicants with appropriate experience in Haematology (including morphology), Transfusion, and Microbiology preferred, although appropriate experience in less than these three disciplines is acceptable for the right applicant as training will be given.  Ability to participate in a 24 hour roster is required.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1.      With minimal direct supervision, analyse pathology specimens using a range of technical skills and analysers taking into account elements related to sample collection, transport, preparation and processing priority.

2.      Authorise results taking into consideration physiological, pathological and methodological variations, providing appropriate advice in accordance with potential variations in these elements.

3.      Actively participate in internal and external quality assurance programs to ensure the quality of results.

4.      Actively participate in continuing professional development and support the delivery of training to more junior pathology staff and other health professionals.

5.      Perform equipment preventive maintenance as required and monitor consumable and reagent levels.

6.      Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.


Selection Criteria:


1.      Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.

2.      Demonstrated knowledge of, and competent laboratory experience (at least 2 years) in, two or more of the clinical laboratory disciplines of Microbiology, Haematology, Biochemistry, and Transfusion/Immuno-haematology.

3.      Demonstrated willingness and skills to participate in professional development programs and to enable participation in a twenty-four hour roster with minimal direct supervision.

4.      Demonstrated appropriate interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate results to other health professionals.

5.      Knowledge and understanding of National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA)/Royal College of Pathologists Australasia (RCPA) accreditation requirements.

6.      An ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.


Further Information: Department of Health has a Smoke Free Policy. Staff are not permitted to smoke anywhere on Departmental premises, facilities or vehicle nor whilst working off-site.  The preferred or recommended applicant will be required to hold a current working with children clearance notice and undergo a criminal history check.  A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is relevant to the position
