The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for permanent and fixed-term Staff Specialist – Anaesthetist vacancies.  Casual appointments will also be available.  Preference for the appointment of full time (1.0 FTE), or at least 0.5 FTE Anaesthetists will apply to both permanent and fixed term positions. 

Applicants will be expected to have a strong clinical background, in addition to experience in teaching, quality assurance and administration/management in a public hospital.  We are particularly seeking Anaesthetists with skills and experience in research and simulation education.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School.  The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region or state. 

The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine is a high quality specialist teaching department with significant research activity.  There are currently a number of multi-centre and local research trials being undertaken within the Department together with strong links with University of Tasmania Faculty of Health Science and the Menzies Research centre. 

The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine provides a comprehensive range of general and specialist clinical anaesthesia services including cardiothoracic, neurosurgery and paediatric surgery specialities. Anaesthesia services are also provided for the hospitals Acute Pain Service, Day Procedure Unit and Endoscopy, and to the Medical Imaging Department including Angiography, CT/MRI and PET scan.


A remuneration package comprising the Award base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicants dependent on clinical experience and seniority. 


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2017

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.


Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

Period of Employment

Permanent and fixed term day work (with on-call), working up to 76 hours per fortnight commencing 1 October 2018. Fixed term appointment periods will be up to two years in duration.

Flexible work arrangements allows for the vacancy to be filled by more than one person.

Fixed term casual day work, working as and when required commencing 1 October 2018 for up to two years.

The Staff Specialist Anaesthetist will:

  • Provide clinical services of the highest possible standard to patients and their families.
  • Actively pursue performance improvements in Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Services by involvement in clinical support roles.
  • Actively pursue improved outcomes for patients by participating in teaching and research relevant to anaesthesia.

Essential Requirements

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.  The following checks are to be conducted: 
1.  Conviction checks in the following areas: 
a)  Crimes of Violence
b)  Sex Related Offences
c)  Serious Drug Offences
d)  Crimes involving dishonesty
2.  Identification check
3.  Disciplinary action in previous employment check

Desirable Requirements

  • Recognition as an Anaesthetist by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) holding FANZCA or equivalent.
  • Experience in Obstetric, Neurosurgical and Paediatric Anaesthesia in the last 12 months.
  • Clinical exposure in a tertiary hospital setting within the last 12 months.

Applicants should note that, for a period of six months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.
