Primary Objective: Ensure the wellbeing of vulnerable children by resolving complaints and undertaking independent monitoring and auditing of youth justice and child protection systems, and out-of-home care facilities. As well as investigating matters relating to the Children’s Commissioner’s other statutory functions.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

1.         Receive and manage complaints under the Children’s Commissioner Act, and determine the appropriateness and level of investigation necessary for each complaint.

2.         Investigate matters relating to the Children’s Commissioner’s other statutory functions, including own initiative investigations and monitoring activities.

3.         Lead and undertake site and residence monitoring visits and undertake analysis of monitoring and audit findings

4.         Prepare concise reports and correspondence pertaining to the results of enquiries, investigations; monitoring activities.

5.         Undertake file and data management as per legislation, policy, procedures and guidelines.

 

Selection Criteria

Essential:

1.         Experience in conducting complex inquiries or investigations and the resolution of complex disputes with minimal supervision.

2.         Experience in interpreting and applying legislation.

3.         Experience in preparing complex reports and correspondence.

4.         Experience in monitoring or reviewing policies, practices and services in a statutory agency or undertaking practice reviews, site investigations or evaluations.

5.         Experience in workload management and the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.

6.         Demonstrated ability to communicate and engage with children and young people, ability to interact with people of diverse cultures.

 

Desirable:

1.         Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline.

2.         Understanding the issues relating to vulnerable children.

3.         Preparedness to travel within the NT.

Further Information:  The preferred or recommended applicant will be required to undergo a criminal history check if the position is considered to be child-related employment under the Working with Children guidelines. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is a relevant criminal history. The Office of the Children’s Commissioner NT has a Smoke Free Policy.  Staff are not permitted to smoke anywhere on departmental premises, facilities or vehicle nor whilst working off-site.
