Primary Objective               

Provide expert technical and strategic accounting advice and expertise and meet Power and Water Corporation’s external reporting obligations as a Government Owned Corporation.


Key Responsibilities

1)       Provide expert technical and strategic accounting advice, including tax planning and compliance, ensuring external reporting obligations meet all legislation and regulatory requirements, including the preparation of the Annual Financial Reports for the Corporation and its subsidiaries and other external reporting obligations, using advanced financial modelling and other methods of analysis and presentation.

2)       Manage the financial accounting functions including account reconciliations, consolidations, appropriate provisioning levels, sundry accounts receivable and tax effect accounting.

3)       Manage the external audit program including effective response to both internal and external audit issues.

4)       Optimise the Corporation’s Treasury function by managing cashflow and funding sources in accordance with Government and other policies.

5)       Provide effective leadership, mentoring and resource management and implement continuous improvement in the Financial Accounting group, whilst carrying out duties in accordance with Power and Water's safety, environmental and quality policy, safety principles, corporate values and strategies.


Selection criteria – Essential

1.         An ability to provide expert advice on interpreting and complying with Australian and International Accounting Standards and taxation legislation.

2.         Significant demonstrated experience in commercial accounting in a complex commercial environment including auditing, consolidations, reconciliations and the preparation of complex financial statements.

3.         Demonstrated ability in policy development and implementation, and the ability to manage associated change, whilst leading and motivating staff and developing the skills base of the work unit.

4.         Significant demonstrated experience in asset management including provision of advice on major asset costing, capitalisation, and management policies, including advanced skill in the use of a wide range of accounting and business software including report generation techniques and methods of analysis and presentation.

5.         Proven written and oral communication, negotiation and mediation skills to deal effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including the ability to interact effectively with people of a diverse culture.


Selection criteria – Desirable

1.         Degree in accounting, finance, business or similar, with either Certified Practising Accountant or Chartered Accountant post-graduate qualifications.

2.         Experience in utilities, heavy industries or related environments with an understanding of contemporary issues relating to the power, water and gas industry in the Northern Territory.
