Primary Objective:

The Mines Division regulates mining operations throughout the Northern Territory.  Mining Operations is responsible for providing high quality advice in relation to the approval and ongoing compliance of mining operations under the Mining Management Act (MMA). All mining-related activities resulting in substantial ground disturbance are regulated under the MMA, including mineral exploration, mining, extractive mineral activity and quarrying.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1.      Implement the Mining Management Act on mining sites including exploration, mining and extractives operations.

2.      Assist in assessing the performance of NT mines in relation to environmental management.

3.      Contribute to the evaluation and management of security bonds.

4.      Contribute to inspections and audits of operating mining and exploration sites.

5.      Comment on, and coordinate responses to, mining industry plans and reports.

6.      Other tasks as required by the Mining Team Manager or the Director.

 

Selection Criteria

Essential:

1.      Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Environmental Science or a related discipline.

2.      Knowledge of environmental management relevant to the mining industry.

3.      Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

4.      Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to write technical reports of a high standard.

5.      Knowledge of the evaluation of management plans and systems.

6.      Willingness and ability to undertake field work, including short stays, in regional and remote areas.

7.      A Northern Territory driver’s licence suitable to operate a manual vehicle, or ability to obtain one.

 

Desirable:

1.      Knowledge of best practice in environmental management and major issues confronting the mining industry.
