The Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital is the Tasmanian State referral centre for Diving Emergencies and is the only civilian Recompression Facility in the State. Tasmania has a population of around 25,000 active divers with 2,000 professional divers. The Hyperbaric facility conducts over 2,000 patient treatments annually and manages approximately 20-30 cases of decompression illness and 60-80 acute non-decompression emergencies. The RHH Hyperbaric facility has full critical care capability. The facility is fully accredited for the 12 month Diploma of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine training with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and is accredited as a special skills rotation with The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. The Facility is also approved for the 6-month Diploma in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine with the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society.

Other medical specialities or GPs (+ GP Trainees) with an interest in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine may also apply to work as registrars at the facility. The successful applicant will be responsible for inpatients and outpatients treated at the Hyperbaric facility under the direction of Hyperbaric Specialists. They will participate in an on call roster for after-hours emergencies.

Hyperbaric Specialist, Nursing and Technical Staff are involved in a number of International Collaborative Research Projects and Multicentre Randomised Trials, and will provide support to successful applicants in undertaking research projects. Protected time is provided for teaching and attendance at specialty training programs in addition to support to attend the ANZHMG short course in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine held each year at the Fiona Stanley Hospital in WA.

Specialists at the RHH Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine have close links with Tasmanian professional diving industries. There are opportunities for field visits to professional and offshore diving operations whilst working at the facility.

The position structure is flexible with the option of working 12 months full time or 6 months full time with a matching term in either: Emergency Medicine, Critical Care or Anaesthesia.

If you wish to work in another department with a matching 6 month term, you will be required to submit a separate application for a registrar position in the nominated Department.

Period of Appointment

Fixed term, full time day work, 80 hours per fortnight, commencing 04 February 2019 until 03 February 2020 (negotiable).

Duties

The Registrar is responsible for the day to day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital and provides after-hours emergency cover at the hospital as determined by the Medical Workforce Unit.

Essential Requirements

Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employees responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer of any new criminal convictions and/or if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

  • General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a preemployment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

1.Conviction checks in the following areas:

a) Crimes of Violence

b) Sex Related Offences

c) Serious Drug Offences

d) Crimes involving dishonesty

2. Identification check

3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check.

Desirable Requirements

  • Applicants are required to be fit to dive as per AS2299.1 or AS4774.2.
  • Emergency Medicine/Critical Care and/or Anaesthesia experience at Registrar level preferable, but not essential.
  • Consideration will be given to GP (senior) registrar or Physician trainee registrars with interest in Diving and Hyperbaric.
