Primary Objective: To work with a multidisciplinary team to admit, review, and manage drug and alcohol clients admitted to the Stringybark Inpatient Unit on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  Two other sessions per week to be worked in outpatient clinics based at Royal Darwin Hospital, or in the Stringybark Unit to assist with treatment and management of Alcohol and Other Drugs Service’s clients.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1.     Provide advice to General Practitioners and other health professionals on the management of clients with alcohol and/or other drug problems.

2.     Provide specialist assessment of clients requiring withdrawal and treatment for alcohol and other drug problems.

3.     As part of a multidisciplinary team liaise with other health professionals in the management of clients to provide comprehensive treatment of care on alcohol and drug withdrawal and management programs.

4.     Assess, treat and refer clients with alcohol and/or other drug use and/or concurrent psychiatric and medical problems.

5.     Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

6.     Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.

 

Selection Criteria

Essential:

1.     Current registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia - Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or ability to become registered.

2.     Membership of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

3.     Demonstrated appropriate interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, which have resulted in effective team membership. Including the ability to liaise with a range of health professionals, both in hospital and community based settings.

4.     Willingness and ability to maintain confidentiality and to deal with sensitive issues in a manner that maintains respect for individuals, particularly in relation to cross cultural issues.

5.     Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team approach where Clinical Team decisions may sometimes conflict with individual practitioners views.

6.     Hold a current Northern Territory drivers licence or have the ability to obtain.

 

Desirable:

1.     Post graduate qualifications or experience in the area of alcohol and other drugs, General Practioner or public health.

 

Further Information: Department of Health has a Smoke Free Policy. Staff are not permitted to smoke anywhere on Departmental premises, facilities or vehicle nor whilst working off-site. The preferred or recommended applicant will be required to hold a current working with children clearance notice and undergo a criminal history check. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is relevant to the position.
