Primary Objective:

Research and prepare strategic policy advice on a broad range of public policy issues.  Assist with development and implementation of policies, initiatives and projects of strategic value to the Northern Territory.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1.   Undertake research and quality evidence-based analysis to provide strategic advice and comment on a range of public policy issues that impact on the Northern Territory, including development of coordinated, whole of government positions.

2.   Provide high level project management and executive level support to senior employees within the business unit.

3.   Develop and maintain productive working relationships across government, the non-government sector and other stakeholders.

4.   Research and prepare reports, briefings and correspondence, including Ministerial, Cabinet Submissions, Legislative Assembly Briefings, Council of Australian Government Briefings and other submissions.

 

Selection Criteria

Essential:

1.   Demonstrated experience in policy research, analysis and provision of strategic policy advice, while demonstrating strong conceptual and analytical skills across a range of policy areas.

2.   Knowledge and understanding of strategic policy issues facing the Northern Territory across a range of economic, social and environmental areas.

3.   Excellent organisational, project management and administrative skills, including the ability to establish priorities while meeting competing deadlines.

4.   Well-developed communication skills and experience preparing briefings, reports and ministerial correspondence.

5.   Ability to work effectively with people at all levels, including from diverse cultures, on cross-government policy and projects.

6.   Proven interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate when working with internal and external stakeholders.

7.   Demonstrated motivation and personal drive with ability to work independently and professionally, as part of a team.

 

Desirable:

1.   A relevant tertiary qualification in economics, environment, health, law discipline or relevant public policy area.

2.   Knowledge or experience in a relevant field of policy, including but not limited to, economic, environment, social or intergovernmental relations

2.   Excellent demonstrated oral and written communication skills with proven ability to prepare briefings, reports and ministerial correspondence on complex matters for a wide range of audiences in plain English.

3.   Proven collaborative skills with the demonstrated ability to establish and sustain productive working relationships within the public sector, and stakeholders at all levels, and with people of diverse cultures.

4.   Demonstrated ability to plan and manage multiple high level projects, including delivering outcomes in an environment of competing priorities and tight deadlines.

5.   High level knowledge and understanding of contemporary and strategic issues facing the Northern Territory and of government policies and strategies to address these issues.

6.   Ability to work as part of a small professional team with minimal supervision, in a challenging environment with stringent deadlines to deliver high quality outcomes including a ‘can-do’ attitude and the ability to lead small project-based teams.
