Established in 1869, the Adelaide Central Market is an icon in the City of Adelaide. The Market is a community of people, traders, artisan producers and shoppers who share a passion for food. Recognising the important economic and cultural role of the Market, the City of Adelaide established an independent subsidiary, the Adelaide Central Market Authority (ACMA) and its Board to guide and support the Market “To be the world’s leading food and produce market”

A unique opportunity is available to candidates aspiring to the role of General Manager, Adelaide Central Market. Reporting through the Chair to the Board of ACMA and working in close collaboration with the City of Adelaide, the General Manager’s role is to achieve the vision for the Adelaide Central Market and undertake leadership of strategic and operational initiatives for the Authority. Creating and managing an environment which enables multiple individual businesses which operate as traders within the Adelaide Central Market to prosper and grow. 

The responsibilities of the General Manager role include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring financial sustainability and growth for the Adelaide Central Market Authority and prosperity for its traders
  • Strengthening of community engagement and cohesion in the wider Market District
  • Building and maintaining a unique fresh produce retail experience showcasing the best fresh food and produce available in South Australia
  • Contributing to an economically prosperous capital city in line with the City of Adelaide’s Strategic Plan
  • Identifying, establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships, relationships and alliances with key internal/external stakeholders, both in the private and public sectors at an international and national level
  • Ensuring effective statutory reporting to the City of Adelaide and full compliance with the reporting requirements of ACMA’s Charter

 

We are seeking a highly motivated, passionate leader with high level written and verbal communication skills and strong customer service ethos. Tertiary qualifications or evidenced substantial experience and capability in the relevant fields of retail, facilities/property management, business development is required as is experienced at leading an organisation at a senior level and demonstrable experience of strategic and operational financial management abilities. Attributes being sought also include sound judgement, integrity and the ability to develop creative solutions and achieve innovative outcomes in an environment of ongoing change.
