Primary Objective: Provide high level strategic and technical advice to ensure the management and control of asbestos within Northern Territory Health meets legislative compliance.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1.   Provide high level strategic and expert advice to ensure that the management and control of asbestos in the workplace meets legislative compliance and the policies and procedures related to asbestos.

2.  Responsible for the maintenance and development of the asbestos register for each workplace and ongoing compliance and availability to workers, health and safety representative and other persons.

3. Ensure that any asbestos removal work is carried out by a business that has the appropriate licence to remove asbestos and maintain a licensed asbestos removal contractors register and register of staff training.

4. Facilitate the provision of information, training and instruction of asbestos management in the workplace and ensure that staff have been appropriately trained to carry asbestos-related work.

5. Engaging and consulting with key stakeholders including senior management and business units regarding asbestos management.

6. Develop and implement procedures advising how the members of the public can access the National Asbestos Exposure Register if they have concerns they have been exposed to asbestos containing material.

7. Follow defined service quality standards, legislative requirements, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

8. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.


Selection Criteria


1.   Sound knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements for the management and control of asbestos in the workplace.

2.   Proven experience in developing and implementing an asbestos management program and maintaining asbestos registers.

3.   Proven experience in risk management systems and the development of policies and procedures.

4.   Proven skills in the use of office and information technology equipment, including Microsoft Office software and Maintenance and Risk Management systems.

5.   Proven ability to communicate, negotiate and influence effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders including the ability to interact with people from diverse cultures.

6.   Proven ability to develop and deliver information and training / awareness sessions.



1.   Formal qualifications in Work Health and Safety or Occupational Hygiene.


Further Information: Department of Health has a Smoke Free Policy.
