As a Science Specialist school, our Laboratory Technicians at Newton Moore Senior High School play an important role. We are seeking to engage an enthusiastic and dedicated laboratory technician.

The successful applicant will have strong communication skills, be highly motivated and possess the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently to assist with the efficient operation of the Science Department.

As Laboratory Technician you will prepare chemicals, equipment and materials, design and construct teaching aids and collect and care for living organisms for study purposes in compliance with chemical, physical and biological laboratory practices and legislative requirements. You will organise preparation areas and classroom laboratories to ensure a safe learning environment for students and staff.

Additionally, the Laboratory Technicians undertake general housekeeping of chemicals, equipment (including repairs and maintenance), ordering supplies/equipment and assisting with stock management tasks. You will liaise with Science subject specialists to determine scientific product needs in relation to experiments and identifying future purchase requirements of science equipment.

Non-teaching staff at Newton Moore SHS make an important contribution to student progress and achievement through the support of school management, teaching practice and the maintenance of positive relationships with students, parents and the community at Newton Moore SHS. Additionally, support staff contribute to outcomes that align with the school vision, business plan and other operational targets by providing assistance to the teaching staff, student services and pastoral care team and school administration.

Newton Moore SHS is an Independent Public School (IPS) located in Bunbury, a coastal city 175kms south of Perth. We have a strong commitment to offering innovative and best practice educational programs. The school delivers two Department of Education Approved Specialist Academic Programs: Science Horizons and Engineering Specialist. Newton Moore SHS is also a Teacher Development School and a Lead Language School and supports with training and assisting staff across the South West.

Newton Moore SHS also provides enrichment through the following programs: Moore Academy of Sport and Health (MASH), Follow the Dream, Clontarf Football Academy, Girls Academy and CALM Cadets.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Knowledge of general science to a Year 12 level or equivalent knowledge or experience.
  • Organisational and time management skills and ability to work independently,
  • Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to use computers and a range of application software packages.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, laboratory safety requirements and procedures, and a willingness for further training related to safety.

ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check; and
  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy

TRAINING

Employees will be required to:

  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
