This is an exciting opportunity to learn the duties and tasks of a Development Planner as a Trainee. You will be participating in on the job training, including providing support in the assessment of Development Applications, site visits, duty planning enquiries and involvement in reviews of the Local Environmental Plan and Development Control Plan.

The successful applicant will be required to satisfactorily progress through and complete an approved specialty qualification as listed in the Essential Criteria.  The Traineeship is for a maximum of 4 years or on completion of your studies, whichever is completed first.

Key activities of this role include:

  • Assessing Development Applications against relevant state and local development controls and recommend determinations;
  • Attending the Duty Planning Counter to provide advice to customers;
  • Researching complex matters and provide appropriate advice, reporting and materials for consideration of senior staff.

Essential Criteria:

  • Currently undertaking an approved course of study with approximately two (2) years left to complete through external study, leading to the award of either a Bachelor Degree in Town Planning or Urban and Regional Planning OR post-graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning;
  • Willingness and commitment to undertake the required qualification course study and assignment workload outside Council working hours;
  • Current Class C driver’s licence;
  • Demonstrated report writing skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with the staff and the public;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the use of Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook);
  • Demonstrated ability to participate and actively contribute in a team environment;
  • Demonstrated initiative, enthusiasm and willingness to acquire knowledge and skills as they relate to town planning in local government.
