Primary Objective: Develop and implement stakeholder engagement and community education programs to increase landholder and community knowledge of bushfire risks and their obligations under the Bushfires Management Act, while ensuring understanding of the roles and responsibilities of BFNT, Volunteer Bushfire Brigades (VBB) and landholders in managing risk and bushfire response.

 

Context Statement: Bushfires NT (BFNT) is the lead government agency for rural bushfire management in the Northern Territory. It works with landowners and the wider community to manage bushfires in the Northern Territory by providing support for mitigation, management and suppression activities, and by coordinating landowner and volunteer participation in response to significant fires.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1.     Develop and implement a Community Engagement and Communications Plan to increase awareness of bushfire risk and management issues throughout the Territory, ensuring cohesive and consistent messaging that underpins BFNT objectives and legislative requirements.

2.     Prepare and disseminate marketing material to extensively promote the message that rural fire management is the responsibility of land owners, utilising a variety of distribution channels to ensure optimum audience reach.

3.     In consultation with relevant BFNT staff and VBBs, prepare and maintain a tool kit of information to assist landowners and the wider community to increase knowledge about identifying and mitigating risk, performing responsibilities, preparing for the bushfire season and taking appropriate action in case of a bushfire incident (Bushfire Management Act).

4.     Collaborate with relevant government entities and staff within the division and the wider agency to prepare public information advices regarding BFNT seasonal activities, such as fire break inspections, and action required to be taken by landowners, such as fuel burns, and disseminate via media and local information networks.  

5.     Ensure all marketing collateral, communication messages and tool kit information are tailored to suit a range of different audiences and can be accessed in a number of ways including via website, social media platforms and traditional distribution mechanisms. 

6.     Develop and coordinate a calendar of community events by which to promote and distribute information about bushfire planning, preparation and management, and the role and services provided by BFNT.

7.     Develop plans and tools to ensure BFNT staff and VBBs are empowered to effectively undertake stakeholder engagement and community education activities.

8.     Participate in incident management and knowledge of incident management policy and practice.

 

Selection Criteria

Essential:

1.     High level management skills and experience in coordinating community engagement programs and projects to diverse client groups.

2.     Demonstrated high level oral and written communication skills with the ability to develop community engagement resources, tools and documents.

3.     Well-developed interpersonal skills, with an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.

4.     Proven ability to deliver high level of strategic initiatives, and to work with minimal supervision, as an effective team member, operating within a multidisciplinary workplace.

5.     Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion, flexibility and confidentiality.

 

Desirable:

1.     Knowledge and understanding of contemporary challenges facing the volunteer area.

2.     Experience working with volunteers in a training or mentoring capacity.

 

Further Information:

1.   The successful applicant may be required to undergo a criminal history check. 

2.   The successful applicant will be required to travel and work in remote locations and work after hours on occasions.
