Primary Objective

Manage and oversee the community engagement, volunteer support and training and extension programs within Bushfires NT, ensuring that these programs are effectively and efficiently delivered and aligned with Bushfires NT’s objectives.

 

Context Statement

Bushfires NT (BFNT) is the lead government agency for rural bushfire management in the Northern Territory. It works with landowners and the wider community to manage bushfire in the Northern Territory by providing support for mitigation, management and suppression activities, and by coordinating landowner and volunteer participation in response to significant fires.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1.     Be responsible for the supervision, training and development of staff involved in coordinating BFNT’s community engagement and volunteer support programs.

2.     Manage the development and implementation of strategies to build the capacity and long-term sustainability of the BFNT volunteer bushfire brigade (VBB) network.

3.     Coordinate the development of a comprehensive training system for BFNT staff, volunteer fire fighters and volunteers undertaking other brigade roles; the training system will incorporate partnerships with training providers and will utilise contemporary, flexible delivery arrangements.

4.     Guide and manage BFNT’s community engagement and public information activities to ensure effective use of resources.

5.     Represent the division by consulting, interacting and liaising with community and industry groups, other government agencies and stakeholders.

6.     As a member of the BFNT management team, contribute to management of the division by participating in planning and review processes, and articulating the plans and aspirations of the engagement and training unit.

7.     Participate in incident management and knowledge of incident management policy and practice.

 

Selection Criteria

Essential

1.     Highly developed organisational and communication skills including the ability to work independently, manage time effectively and contribute to the professional development and learning needs of colleagues.

2.     Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate about complex issues with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

3.     Demonstrated leadership and management capacity including ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team setting, and apply skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, teamwork and leadership.

4.     Demonstrated collaboration and negotiation skills including the ability to engage, motivate and influence others in an environment of change and complexity.

5.     Demonstrated ability to effectively represent the organisation at meetings and public events while observing confidentiality and political sensitivity boundaries.

6.     Knowledge and understanding of contemporary challenges facing volunteers.

7.     Demonstrated knowledge of accredited training and flexible learning methods.

 

Desirable

1.     Formal qualifications relevant to this position.

2.     Experience as a volunteer and/or experience working with volunteers in training or mentoring capacity.
