The role of the Building Consents department is to ensure safe sustainable buildings for Aucklanders making it easier to build compliant developments in the Auckland region. We ensure there is a strong focus on customer-centric delivery and focus on providing first-rate business services.

The Capability team is responsible for competency assessments and technical audits at an individual level and specialist functions such as LBP complaints, product assessments, maintenance of the producer statement register maintenance amongst other duties. The team predominately work within Regulation 5,10,11,13, 14,17 and 18 with a shared responsibility for ISO17020 with the Service Strategy and Integration department.

The Opportunity

There is an exciting opportunity for a Competency/Technical Assessor to assist in the implementation and ongoing development of the National Competency Assessment System (NCAS) programme for staff performing a technical function and ensure training needs are assessed and captured and work with the training team to identify programmes that are suitable to satisfy those needs.

Reporting to the Team Leader Assessment, we will look to you to actively contribute to setting and implementing the strategic direction for building consent and provide leadership in BCA staff competency assessment and staff training. Furthermore, we need you to proactively assist in a programme that seeks to improve technical competency of all BCA staff particularly with respect to building policy aspects associated with the NCAS, Building Act, Building Code, Bylaws, and NZ Building Standards.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to maintain knowledge and ensure technical criteria for competency assessments are up-to-date and reflect what is happening in the industry.

What we are looking for

Ideally, you will have significant experience in building related regulatory services including 3 years at a senior advisory level.

You will also have:

  • A relevant professional or tertiary qualification and/or considerable experience in a building regulatory related environment
  • Workplace Assessor
  • An Adult Education Training qualification
  • Full New Zealand Driving License

Technical Competencies:

  • Experience in assessing or establishing the competence of employees performing technical roles
  • Project management or experience in similar role within construction sector
  • Excellent MS Office skills
  • Sound process orientation
  • The ability to view the business as an integrated whole, rather than separate disciplines and apply this thinking to problem-solving and business improvement
  • Computer literacy to enable effective production of reports, monitoring and statistical information and information access
  • Excellent oral and written verbal communication skills
  • High level of change engagement in the interests of ongoing improvements to the workplace
  • Sound judgement and decision-making skills.
